SCBA & FIREMAN’S OUTFIT

Oral-Ship Construction, Stability, Ship Safety and Environment Protection (FUNCTION –3)

The following questions came from WhatsApp group where candidates posts the question right after they had finished their oral exam.
  • The minimum capacity of an air bottle is 1200 liters.
  • Maximum pressure should be 180-200 bars.
  • Maximum weight should not exceed 19 kgs.
  • Capable of working for 30 minutes.
  • Shall give both audible & visual alarms when reduced to not less than 200 ltr.
  • Fireproof line with snap hook, min. length 30 m.

 

  • 100% spare cylinder on vessels having compressors on board, i.e., a minimum of 4 SCBA sets and 4 spare cylinders.
  • 200% spare cylinder on vessels not having a compressor on board, i.e., a minimum of 4 SCBA sets and 8 spare cylinders.
  • Check straps, visors, and valves on face masks.
  • Check that the bottle is charged to the optimum pressure.
  • Low-pressure audible & visual alarms are to be tested.
  • Check the harness and back plate.
  • Check the demand valve.
  • Check cylinder body, hydrostatic test date & valve condition.

The demand valve is one that supplies the air to the wearer when inhaling.

  • For vessels between 500-2500 tons, a minimum of 2 sets is required.
  • For vessels between 2500-4000 tons, a minimum of 3 sets is required.
  • For vessels 4000 tons and above, a minimum of 4 sets is required.
