A second mate (2nd Mate) is a licensed member of the deck department of a merchant ship holding a Second Mates Certificate of Competency, which is issued by the administration. The second mate is a watch keeping officer, customarily the ship's navigator. This rank comes with a lot of responsibilities where people are trusting you with their lives while they sleep. The major duty of a second mate on-board ship is keeping a bridge navigation watch for 8 hours a day & cargo watch while vessel is at port. The Second Mate is responsible for maintaining the bridge navigational and communications equipment as well as assisting with the vessel's piloting, navigation, safety and small boat operations.
Life at sea is not so easy. Life at sea is full of challenges and immense satisfaction. While at sea, you will be putting all your skills and determination to actual test. You will be given responsibility and will be doing an important job for which you would be uniquely trained. Living at sea is to be constantly in danger and constantly having to take that danger seriously. At the same time you must be light hearted enough not to become moody or depressed easily. Often there are periods of extreme stress and overwork followed by long periods of boredom. You need to be able to work well under pressure and also dealing with uneven sleep schedules and sometimes lack of sleep entirely. You need to be able to wake up immediately in the middle of the night to go and handle whatever emergency arises. Living at sea is hard work.
