Oral-Ship Construction, Stability, Ship Safety and Environment Protection (FUNCTION –3)

The following questions came from WhatsApp group where candidates posts the question right after they had finished their oral exam.
  • Weight not to exceed 23 kg.
  • Fluid content not more than 13.5 liters & not less than 9 liters.
  • Carbon dioxide type: min 5 kg of CO₂.
  • Dry chemical powder type: min 5 kg of dry powder.
  • Extinguisher intended to be used in the spare must be near its entrance.
  • CO₂ is not to be placed in the accommodation space.

Spare requirement:

Rechargeable:

  • 100% for the first 10 extinguishers.
  • 50% for the remaining.
  • Not more than a total of 60 spare charges are required.

Non-rechargeable:

  • Spare extinguisher of the same quantity.

 (i) Water-type extinguisher         (ii) Foam-type extinguishers

  • Minimum duration: 30 sec, 90 sec for water type

(iii) CO₂ fire extinguisher

  • Minimum Capacity: 05 Kgs
  • Required CO₂ cartridge: NA
  • Inner pressure: NA
  • Range: 1.5 meters
  • Minimum duration: 10 to 15 sec

(iv) Dry chemical fire extinguisher

  • Minimum Capacity: 05 kgs, 10 kgs

  • Confirm the extinguisher is visible, unobstructed, and in its designated location.
  • Verify the locking pin is intact and the tamper seal is unbroken.
  • Examine the extinguisher for physical damage, corrosion, leakage, or a clogged nozzle.
  • Ensure the pressure gauge is in the operable range or position.
  • Ensure it is full by just lifting it, or you can weigh it.
  • Ensure the operating instructions are facing outward.
  • Check the last service date on the tag (must have been inspected within the past 12 months)
  • Put initials and date on the back of the tag.

a) Working of DCP?

DCP extinguishers put out fire by coating the fuel with a thin layer of dust, interrupting the chemical reaction & cutting off the oxygen supply.

b) Maintenance of DCP

  • Check the hose outlet and clean
  • Check the safety pin in position
  • Check labels are in place
  • Check the pressure needle in the green zone.
  • Check for caking of powder.
  • It must be inverted once a month to avoid choking.
  • Weight a cylinder
  • Do not use in a fully enclosed space or a poorly ventilated area.
  • Working pressure is high (55 bar), so hold it tightly.
  • Due to higher pressure, it discharges very quickly, so aim directly at the fire.
  • When CO₂ turns from liquid to gas, the temperature is extremely low; Do not hold the horn until it is a frost-free horn.
  • Switch off the power supply of the equipment in a fire.
  • It makes a very strong discharge noise, which is normal.
  • Name of manufacturer
  • Types of fires
  • Type and quantity of extinguishing medium
  • Instructions for use and recharge
  • Approval details
  • Year of mfg
  • Test pressure
