FIXED FOAM EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM

Oral-Ship Construction, Stability, Ship Safety and Environment Protection (FUNCTION –3)

The following questions came from WhatsApp group where candidates posts the question right after they had finished their oral exam.
  • A foam monitor should have a capacity to discharge 3 liters/m²/minute, & in no case should the output of any monitor be less than 1250 liters/minute.
  • The rate of foam should not be less than 0.6 liters/m²/min.
  • The system shall be capable of supplying foam for at least 20 minutes (IG System fitted)
  • The main control station should be located away from the cargo area.
  • Expansion ratio should not exceed 12:1 (low expansion foam)
  • The capacity of the applicator should be not less than 400 liters/min and throw not less than 15 meters.
  • Line up the fire pump to the foam line.
  • Start the fire pump.
  • Open the suction and discharge valve of the foam pump.
  • Start the foam pump.
  • The foam pump delivers the liquid via a proportioner, which ensures the correct mixing ratio.
  • Open the foam monitor hydrant valve & fight the fire.
  • High expansion foam is used in closed spaces like the engine room. Its ratio is from 1:200 to 1:1000.
  • Low expansion foam is to be used in open areas because it has a higher density. Low density may get thrown by the wind. Its ratio is from 1:2 to 1:20.

SOLAS requires the foam sample to be tested after 3 years from the date it was placed onboard & thereafter every year.
