EMERGENCY FIRE PUMP

Oral-Ship Construction, Stability, Ship Safety and Environment Protection (FUNCTION –3)

The following questions came from WhatsApp group where candidates posts the question right after they had finished their oral exam.
  • Capacity of not less than 40% of the required capacity of fire pumps, but in any case not less than 25 m³/hr.
  • Capable of delivering 2 jets of water from the biggest nozzle available on board, but not less than 25 m³/hr.
  • Diesel power sources are to be used.
  • Should start in a cold condition of 0°C at least 6 times within 30 minutes or at least twice within the first 20 minutes.
  • The tank has sufficient fuel for at least 3 hours and reserve fuel for an additional 15 hours.
  • No direct access between the engine room and the emergency fire pump. If provided, it should be an airlock.
  • In tankers, deck isolation valves on the fire main line should be fitted at an interval of not more than 40 meters.
  • Check that the suction valve is fully open.
  • In the centrifugal-type fire pump, close the discharge valve.
  • Open the air vent on the volute casing.
  • Close the vent once water comes out.
  • Start the pump and open the discharge valve gradually.
