The following questions came from WhatsApp group where candidates posts the question right after they had finished their oral exam.

1. SOLAS requirement for Hyper mist System?

Should have fitted in every cargo ship of 2000 GRT and above.
Should have fitted in the machinery space of 500 m³ in volume and above.
It must have an independent power source.
The number and arrangement should be such as to ensure distribution of water at least 5 l/m²/min.
Should have a manual as well as an auto-release mechanism.
Activation shall give a visual and audible alarm in the protected space.

2. SOLAS requirement for Sprinkler System?

Should have fitted in every cargo ship of 2000 GRT and above.
Should have fitted in the machinery space of 500 m³ in volume and above.
It must have an independent power source.
It shall be resistant to corrosion by the marine atmosphere.
It shall come into operation within the temperature range from 68°C to 79°C.
Each sprinkler head is to cover about 16 m² of area.
Heads are to be spaced not more than 4 m apart and 2 m from the vertical wall.
Each sprinkler head should be capable of discharging at 100 liters/min.

3. Difference between Hyper mist and Sprinkler system?

HYPER MIST	SPRINKLER
It uses fresh water.	It uses sea water.
It activates when two different detectors are activated.	It has a temperature bulb.
More pressure is required.	Less pressure is required.
The droplet size is small.	Droplet size is bigger than hyper mist.
