Oral-Navigation (FUNCTION –1)

The following questions came from WhatsApp group where candidates posts the question right after they had finished their oral exam.

1. What are the checks to be carried out on ELDIS lamp?

Keep the battery charged.
Check voltage and operate lamp once a week.
Check electrolyte level and its specific Gravity once a month.
Check for any corrosion in terminal and apply petroleum jelly to avoid corrosion.
At least two spare bulb should be stored.

2. Frequencies?

EPIRB: 406 Mhz & 121.5 Mhz (Homing signal for locating)

SART: 9.2-9.5 Ghz (3 cm X-band radar)

NAVTEX: English- 518 Khz, Regional language- 490 Khz, Tropical region- 4209.5 Khz

3. What additional navigation equipment will you carry in Polar water?

Gyro and magnetic compass may give unreliable reading, hence one GNSS (satellite) compass is required
At-least two speed and distance measuring device
Two Echo Sounder with an independent transducer
Two RADAR’s
Two Gyro Compass
Two search light with two spare lamps
A weather fascimile receiver and a spare antenna
