GYRO COMPASS

Oral-Navigation (FUNCTION –1)

The following questions came from WhatsApp group where candidates posts the question right after they had finished their oral exam.
  • This error is present in a compass which is damped in a tilt.
  • The magnitude of the error depends on the observer’s latitude i.e. Sin(error) ∝ Tan(latitude).
  • The error is easterly in Northern Hemisphere & westerly in Southern Hemisphere.
  • The error is NIL at equator.

Speed Error= Speed × Cos course / 90° × cos lat

Master Gyro discovers and maintain the true north reading with the help of gyroscope.

Repeater Compass indicates the true direction transmitted electrically from the Master Compass.

Because course speed error increases with latitude and is inversely proportional to Cos latitude, which is infinite at the pole.

And, Damping error is directly proportional to Tan latitude.
