Oral-Navigation (FUNCTION –1)

The following questions came from WhatsApp group where candidates posts the question right after they had finished their oral exam.

Making way means vessel is moving ahead or astern with some relative speed through the water by means of her own propulsion.

Under way means a vessel is not at anchor, or made fast to the shore or aground.

🞸 If the vessel is drifting with current, she is under way but not making way.

🞸 To be making way, a vessel has to be under way.

Speed over ground is the speed of the ship with respect to the ground or any other fixed object such as buoy or island.   It is used for collision avoidance with fixed object.

Speed through water is the speed of the ship with respect to the water.   This is ideal for collision avoidance as the actual aspect of the target vessel is seen; used for correct application for COLREGS.

Passage is when a vessel is following a course at given time.

Safe passage is when a vessel is making an alteration to avoid another vessel by remaining within the margins of safety.

Healthy means everything is fine with respect to the health of the crew member of a ship.

Pratique is the license given to the ship to enter port, that indicates that it is free from contagious disease.

  • It is a commercial service provided by commercial companies for cargo ship to optimise their voyage performance.
  • It provide weather information for safe & efficient voyage planning.
  • It increases transparency & reduces the risk of losses.
  • Go to bridge at least 15 min before time
  • Inspect CMG/SMG of during past hour
  • Check course to steer, position of course alteration, depth of water etc
  • Read & sign master’s night order book
  • Check weather report
  • Check compass error
  • Ensure all relevant navigational lights are ON & working
  • Ensure watch on VHF Ch-16 & also check the volume of  VHF
  • Check R.P.M indicator, course recorder etc.
  • Check lookout man and make sure he is alert
  • Understand the traffic movement on sight
  • Check picture on radar and get accustomed to it
  • Hydraulic type
  • Electro-hydraulic type
  • Electric power steering

HEAD LINES: 45° on the bow.   The purpose of these lines is to hold the ship in place on the berth.

FWD/AFT BREAST LINES: 90° to the ship’s fwd & aft line.   The purpose of these lines is to prevent drift in the event of crosswind blowing off the berth.

FWD/AFT SPRING LINES: lead well aft/fwd.   The purpose of these lines is to prevent the ship from moving back and forward along the berth. These will carry ‘weight’ in response to prevailing wind or water flow.

STERN LINES: 45° on the quater.   The purpose of these lines is to hold the ship in place on the berth.

We have SAT-C & FLEET-77 on-board

  • For medical advice, we have to dial SAC (special access code) 32. It will connect to nearest CRS (coast radio station).
  • We can also use VHF or MF/HF RT…Transmit the urgency signal to CRS or to any ship which may have doctor on-board.   Use word “PAN PAN” X 3 MEDICO

=> We can also email to The International Radio Medical Center (C.I.R.M), Rome which provides free medical assistance to seafarer of any nationality world wide.

  • Stop your vessel
  • All way off
  • Call master, Inform to Engine room
  • Check echo sounder sounding
  • Check your passage
  • Check Tidal data – time of High / Low water, current etc.
  • Establish communication with the vessel and conform their status / condition if they require any assistance & check the time of grounding
  • Update passage, if required & continue as per master’s instruction
